#96: Buy and use cheap tickets from Gold Star Events

On a tip from the comments here, I got tickets to see Candide on August 20. Which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thoroughly. I don't know what interpretations or spins the producer/director made or if the show is always like that, but it was very amusing. I mean, the Titanic moment was clearly not part of what Leonard Bernstein envisioned in 1956. (It is also not something the bulk of the audience caught, which is sad because I thought that it was hilarious that they threw it in there. Two of the characters were supposedly sailing away somewhere near the end of the first act and they did the standing on the prow of the ship with arms out to the sides. It was cheesy in Titanic and just plain funny in Candide because it was so unexpected. Just a little extra gag for those quick enough to catch it. I'm thinking that what with the average age of the audience, maybe not so many of them ever saw the movie.) But the way it was acted - all of the characters were waaaay over the top about their personalities. I'm not sure if it is ever more subtle or not. But I liked it the way it was. So two thumbs up to that.

The seats were amazing. Considering what I paid especially. The theater wasn't huge as far as theaters go (only other opera I have seen was in the War Memorial Opera House which is not humongous but also not what I would call cozy), but my seat seemed quite good for all that. And I did not spring for the most expensive seats either.

The drive was... worse than I expected. But whatever. I still had enough time for a quick Quiznos dinner. Going home would have been okay had I not forgotten something at work and had to stop there.
