#46: Buy something at Sephora

Completed on 12/12/2005. Sort of.

I was in a friend's wedding and needed red lipstick to match our red bridesmaids dresses. So I went to the Sephora with a fabric sample and asked a sales associate for help. Well.

The staff at Sephora apparently all wear radio headsets. So when the woman I asked sent out a general inquiry "Any good suggestions for a red lipstick?" I couldn't help but be reminded of every spy or secret service agent depicted in TV or movies. This was also late at night so the customer to sales associate ratio was something like 2:5. Despite that, I wouldn't say that it was a great shopping experience. I was really worried about getting the color just right. Yet the people who helped me seemed almost bored. "Ah, here's a red lipstick. And this one is good too." Uh, yes, great. But I don't really do make up that much. Will it match? Will it be too orange-y? They were sort of patronizing when I asked these things. There was sort of a "take this lipstick and go away" vibe. I was waiting for someone to say "try this on" or to, you know, look at my fabric sample. Give me advice. I mean, this is supposed to be the mecca of make-up shoppers everywhere, right?

I did buy the $23 lipstick. And the morning of the wedding when I took it out of the package and tried it on it was *all wrong*. Too orange, not flattering with my skin, just overall ugh. So I am building up the courage to return it. Thankfully, I already had a really great red lipstick that worked wonderfully with the dress. I got it as part of a free Clinique bonus time set and had forgotten all about it until I was frantically searching through my bathroom for something half-way decent to wear to the wedding.

Even though I am returning the lipstick, I am crossing this off my list. For one, I did do the Sephora shopping experience. Secondly, at the same time I got a make-over at the MAC counter at Bloomingdale's and found a great eyeshadow combo. My makeover guy even got me to do "eyeliner" halfway decently using the special brush and powder instead of pencil. Of course he also said to me "This mascara really extends the lashes. It will make you look like you are wearing fake eyelashes. Sometimes fake eyelashes are entirely appropriate for daytime weddings."
